Stewart Jones – Review in the Globe and Mail 09/12/09
The Globe and Mail / Visual Arts Review
Saturday Sept 12 2009
Gary Michael Dault
Toronto-based painter Stewart Jones makes strongly realized, thickly painted cityscapes. (“I paint what I know – places that I’ve been to, and taken something from.”) A great many of his paintings are actually alleyscapes, and the odd and rather engaging thing about them is that they’re painted at odd angles, as if Jones were painting while he walked.
Even though the works are indelibly Toronto-centred, their woozy, vertiginous angling lends them a kind of German expressionist look: Dr. Caligari comes to Metro. Perhaps the oddest, and most enjoyable, thing about Jones is that he is a meticulous painter of other people’s graffiti (as it exists on the walls of the buildings in his paintings). Graffiti on graffiti.
